PSD2 Timeline: deployment of 3D Secure 2.0

EMVCo. 3DS 2.0 or 3DS2 is the official name for the latest versions of the 3-D Secure protocol. Its design meets the specifications on Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) found in the Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) published by the European Banking Authority (EBA) and approved in March 2018.

Some acronyms and keywords are used in the timeline. Here is their definition:

  • EBA

EBA, or European Banking Authority, is part of the European System of Financial Supervision (ESFA) made up of three supervisory authorities: the European Securities and Markets Authorities (ESMA), the European Banking Authority (EBA) and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA).

  • EMV 3DS

EMV 3DS new version, or “EMV 3DS 2.0”, or “3DS2”, is the official name for the latest versions of the 3-D Secure protocol. Its design meets the specifications on Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) found in the Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) published by the European Banking Authority (EBA) and approved in March 2018.

  • CB2A, CBAE and CB2C

CB2A, CBAE and CB2C are protocols that define data exchange on Cartes Bancaires network.

  • MPADS CB 5.5

MPADS CB 5.5, or « Manuel du Paiement à Distance Sécurisé CB » version 5.5, is guidelines that define data exchange on version 5.5 of Cartes Bancaires network.

  • SafeKey 

SafeKey, or American Express SafeKey, is the solution offered by American Express to secure online paymens. SafeKey 2.0 is the latest version of the solution, compliant with EMV 3DS specifications on Strong Customer Authentication.

  • RBA : Risk Based Authentication

RBA, or Risk-based authentication, is an online payment authorization risk evaluation conducted by the payment method issuer. The RBA analysis relies on anti-fraud algorithms and is a new obligation for issuers defined within the Strong Customer Authentication section of PSD2.
